Abstract

Social media has become an integral part of adolescent life, shaping self-perception, identity development, and mental well-being. This paper explores the complex relationship between social media use and self-esteem among adolescents, emphasizing both the positive and negative implications for mental health. While social media platforms provide opportunities for self-expression, social connection, and access to supportive communities, excessive use and exposure to curated online personas can contribute to body dissatisfaction, social comparison, and cyberbullying. The reinforcement of idealized beauty standards and unrealistic lifestyles often leads to decreased self-worth and heightened anxiety. Additionally, the influence of likes, comments, and validation-seeking behaviors can impact adolescents' emotional stability and self-confidence. However, digital literacy, parental guidance, and positive online engagement strategies can help mitigate the adverse effects. This paper underscores the need for further research into the psychological impact of social media and highlights the importance of fostering healthy digital habits among adolescents.
