Abstract

Student success is traditionally evaluated based on academic performance; however, emerging research suggests that social-emotional skills, such as gratitude and kindness, play a crucial role in overall achievement. This paper explores the psychological mechanisms underpinning these attributes, drawing from Positive Psychology and Social Learning Theory to examine their influence on student behaviour and educational outcomes. Gratitude fosters cognitive engagement, enhances motivation, and strengthens resilience, leading to improved academic performance. Similarly, kindness promotes cooperative learning, peer support, and a positive classroom environment, which contribute to greater student success. Furthermore, gratitude and kindness have significant social and emotional benefits, including reduced stress, increased emotional regulation, and stronger peer relationships. By integrating these values into educational practices—through gratitude journaling, kindness initiatives, mentorship programs, and community service—schools can cultivate a supportive learning environment that prioritizes holistic student development. This study underscores the necessity of incorporating social-emotional learning into academic frameworks to foster both intellectual and personal growth.
