Abstract

In the face of increasingly complex environmental and social challenges, the world requires a fundamental shift in how we approach education. Sustainable futures depend on the ability of individuals and societies to think critically, act responsibly, and work collaboratively across disciplines. This chapter explores the concept of sustainable futures in the classroom and the role of multidisciplinary approaches in preparing teachers to address these challenges. By integrating sustainability into education, we can empower students to become active participants in creating a more equitable and environmentally conscious world. However, this requires teachers to be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to foster sustainable futures. This chapter argues that teacher education programs must prioritize sustainability and multidisciplinary approaches to prepare teachers for the complexities of the 21st century. A conceptual framework for integrating sustainability into multidisciplinary approaches is presented, along with examples of sustainable futures in different subject areas. The chapter also discusses strategies for preparing teachers for multidisciplinary approaches, including key competencies, assessment and evaluation strategies, and the role of teacher education programs. By reorienting teacher education towards sustainable futures and multidisciplinary approaches, we can empower teachers to create learning environments that promote sustainability, equity, and social justice. This chapter contributes to the ongoing conversation about the role of education in shaping sustainable futures and provides insights for teacher educators, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to integrate sustainability into their work. Ultimately, this chapter aims to inspire and support educators in their efforts to create a more sustainable and equitable world for all, where individuals can thrive and contribute to the well-being of both people and the planet.
