Abstract

This conceptual paper explores the critical role of multidisciplinary pedagogy in promoting sustainable development through education. As the world grapples with complex environmental, social, and economic challenges, there is a growing recognition of the need for educational approaches that foster holistic learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Multidisciplinary pedagogy, which integrates knowledge and methods from multiple disciplines, offers a promising framework for teaching sustainable development. This paper examines the theoretical foundations of sustainability education and multidisciplinary learning, and discusses the implications for teacher preparation. It argues that teachers need to develop competencies in designing and implementing multidisciplinary approaches that promote sustainability literacy, critical thinking, and collaboration. The paper also highlights the importance of professional development programs that support teachers in integrating sustainability education across disciplines. By reorienting teacher preparation to focus on multidisciplinary pedagogy, educators can empower students to address the complex challenges of sustainable development and create a more just and sustainable future. Furthermore, this approach can help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, enabling students to develop a deeper understanding of sustainability issues and their interconnectedness. Ultimately, the effective implementation of multidisciplinary pedagogy in teacher preparation can contribute to the development of a new generation of educators who are equipped to inspire and empower students to become active participants in creating a sustainable future.
