Abstract

This article critically examines the emotional labour and professional precarity experienced by contractual teachers in India. Drawing on empirical research, policy analysis, and qualitative studies, it contrasts the conditions of contractual and permanent teachers, highlighting disparities in pay, benefits, autonomy, and professional identity. The article explores how insecure employment structures intensify emotional burnout and marginalization. It also reviews recent protests and offers policy recommendations for reducing inequity and emotional strain through structural reforms, peer support systems, and mental-health interventions. The analysis underscores the urgent need to recognize and address the invisible emotional toll on India’s vast contract teaching workforce.
