Emotional intelligence (EI) and heart-based learning are central to holistic education, integrating cognitive, affective, physical, and spiritual dimensions of learning. This chapter explores how cultivating EI and learning ‘with the heart’ fosters whole-person development across all ages. We begin by defining holistic education and emotional intelligence, noting that an emotion-aware, compassionate classroom supports academic success and well-being. Theoretical foundations include Mayer, Salovey’s ability model of EI (“monitor one’s own and others’ feelings…use this information”), as well as holistic learning traditions that value mind–body–spirit unity. We describe pedagogical strategies – from SEL curricula and mindfulness practices to cooperative projects and “heartfulness” meditation – that build EI, resilience, and empathy in learners. International initiatives (e.g. UNESCO policy on SEL, IB learner profiles, India’s heartfulness programs) illustrate global practices. Real-world cases (e.g. school-based meditation programs reducing anxiety) highlight outcomes. Challenges (rigid curricula, teacher training gaps) and opportunities (growing research, digital tools) are discussed. Integrating EI and heart-based approaches enriches learning intellectually, emotionally, physically and spiritually, preparing learners of all ages to flourish in a complex world.Published
