Abstract

This chapter examines the role that somatic awareness plays in children's overall development, with particular attention to how it might be incorporated into educational settings. Emotional control, cognitive function, and social connection all depend on somatic awareness, the capacity to sense internal body sensations like breathing, heartbeat, and muscle tension. Based on developmental psychology, neuroscience, and educational philosophy, this chapter emphasizes how somatic exercises such as body mapping, breath work, and mindful movement help children's attention, emotional literacy, and interoception. The neurophysiological foundation of somatic integration is supported by a review of important theoretical frameworks, including Embodied Cognition and Polyvagal Theory. The chapter examines inclusive teaching methods and highlights how they apply to students who are trauma-informed and neurodivergent. This practitioner-friendly manual, which is full of case studies and treatments supported by research, positions somatic awareness as a fundamental component of holistic education rather than an after-school activity.
