Abstract

Stress has been a subject of scholarly investigation since the mid-twentieth century and is recognized as an inherent aspect of human life. Students, in particular, encounter numerous challenges at various stages of their academic journey, which can lead to heightened levels of stress. Excessive stress has been shown to interfere with key academic-related cognitive functions, including attention, memory, thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Such impairments often result in poor academic performance and lower grades, thereby further complicating students’ educational experiences. Academic demands, personal development, and the necessity to adapt to new environments—each integral to the educational process—can trigger multiple challenges and transitions, inevitably exposing students to stress throughout their academic path. On a global scale, academic stress has emerged as a significant concern, influencing multiple dimensions of students’ lives. Consequently, examining the impact of stress on academic performance is essential for understanding the complex role of psychological factors in educational outcomes and for formulating effective intervention strategies. The present study seeks to provide insights into academic stress by exploring its causes, effects on students’ academic and emotional wellbeing, and various stress-management techniques.
