The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in higher education has revolutionized the methods through which students access information, complete assignments, and interact with learning environments. However, simply the availability to use AI tools is not a guarantee of better learning outcomes; students’ awareness and literacy about AI - what it is, how it works, what its limitations are, and what its ethical implications are - seems to be critical mediating factors. This article involves an exploration of the role of AI awareness in the improvement of learning outcomes in the higher education system through a narrative review of the most recent empirical and conceptual research on AI literacy, AI in education, and student performance. It synthesizes the evidence that increased levels of responsible AI awareness are related to improved cognitive learning outcomes, improved self-regulated learning. It also talks about how low or superficial AI awareness can result in misuse, over-reliance and risk to academic integrity that can undermine learning. Based on recent AI literacy frameworks and validated tools, the paper proposes a conceptual model of a connection between AI awareness and learning outcomes through three key pathways: (i) strategic and critical use of AI tools; (ii) metacognitive regulation and academic integrity; and (iii) affective factors, such as confidence, anxiety, and motivation. The study concludes with some practical suggestions to universities, libraries, and faculty members on how to design AI awareness efforts and incorporate AI literacy into curricula in a way that will have the greatest positive learning impact and the fewest risks.Published
