Abstract

The speedy metamorphosis of the world community, under the influence of technological progress, globalization, and the alteration of socio-economic relations, has made it necessary to rethink the process of studying. The traditional models of curricula that adhere to the principles of content delivery and standardized testing are becoming particularly inefficient in equipping the student to deal with the intricacies of the 21st century. This chapter discusses the necessity to redesign learner-centred, flexible, interdisciplinary, and real-world-based curriculum frameworks. It critically evaluates the drawbacks of traditional strategies and brings forth the new trends of thinking, which include competency-focused education, digitization, experiential education and inclusive pedagogies. The importance of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, and digital literacy as the key competencies of the modern learner is emphasized. Another aspect that has been addressed in the chapter is the role of teachers as facilitators, the significance of culturally responsive content, and how ethical and sustainable views can be incorporated in designing the curriculum. Based on the international education trends and the Indian situation, it is suggested that a comprehensive and transformative model of curriculum be implemented to encourage lifelong learning, flexibility and social responsibility. Finally, reimagining the curriculum should not be seen as an academic endeavour only, but a social necessity to prepare the learner with skills and values that will help them survive in an uncertain and fast-changing world.
