Abstract

The way we teach has changed a lot. Before we just focused on achievement. Now we want to help students develop in all ways through Social-Emotional Learning. Before we thought students were successful if they could remember a lot of facts and do well on tests. But now we know that to be successful students need to be able to understand and manage their emotions. This is often called " IQ. "The discussion is about the five core competencies of Social-Emotional Learning. These are self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. The Indian government has a plan called the National Education Policy 2020. This plan says that schools should help students become well-rounded and able to handle the challenges of life. This chapter is about Social-Emotional Learning in all levels of education. It is about how Social-Emotional Learning can help students from the start of school all the way to college. In school and high school Social-Emotional Learning helps students focus on their schoolwork and reduces stress. In college Social-Emotional Learning is necessary for students to be ready for a career. It helps students work well with others and be resilient. This chapter also talks about how important it's to include all students in Social-Emotional Learning. This includes students with learning needs, such as students with ADHD. The chapter also talks about the challenges of teaching Social-Emotional Learning. It is hard to measure if students are learning these skills. We also need to be sensitive to the culture of the students. Social-Emotional Learning helps students become citizens who can work well with others. Social-Emotional Learning is about helping students develop Social-Emotional Learning skills so they can succeed in life.
