Abstract

In modern healthcare systems serving culturally and linguistically diverse populations, physiotherapists must understand how patients’ cultural beliefs, social contexts, and values influence their health behaviours and rehabilitation outcomes. Integrating culturally responsive teaching methods into physiotherapy education equips students to deliver equitable, patient-centred care. By developing cultural competence within curricula, students learn to recognise diversity, communicate effectively across cultures, and adapt rehabilitation approaches to meet individual needs. Educational strategies such as reflective learning, inclusive classroom practices, and community-based clinical placements foster intercultural skills and real-world understanding. Evidence indicates that students exposed to culturally responsive training demonstrate improved communication, greater confidence, and enhanced ability to work with diverse populations. Clinical experiences in multicultural settings further deepen awareness of how cultural factors affect health beliefs, participation, and adherence to treatment. Therefore, embedding culturally responsive pedagogy in physiotherapy education strengthens patient engagement, improves therapeutic relationships, and contributes to more effective, inclusive, and equitable healthcare outcomes.
