PREPARING TEACHERS FOR INTERDISCIPLINARY STEAM EDUCATION THROUGH SANSKRIT HERITAGE

Abstract

In the twenty-first century, education systems across the world emphasize interdisciplinary learning, creativity, and innovation. STEAM education-an approach integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics-has emerged as an effective framework for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills among learners. However, the successful implementation of STEAM education depends largely on well-prepared teachers who can integrate multiple disciplines into meaningful learning experiences. In the Indian context, the rich intellectual and cultural heritage preserved in Sanskrit literature offers valuable resources for interdisciplinary education. Sanskrit texts encompass diverse fields such as mathematics, astronomy, medicine, architecture, linguistics, aesthetics, and philosophy. This chapter explores how Sanskrit heritage can contribute to teacher preparation for interdisciplinary STEAM education. It examines the philosophical foundations of knowledge in Sanskrit traditions, highlights examples of interdisciplinary knowledge embedded in classical texts, and discusses strategies for integrating these insights into contemporary teacher education programs.
