APPLYING LEARNER-CENTRED PEDAGOGY IN PHYSIOTHERAPY TRAINING AND PRACTICE

Abstract

Learner-centred pedagogy (LCP) is a paradigm shift in the field of physiotherapy education because it counteracts the limitations of traditional teacher-centred models that focus on passive learning of material. This chapter reviews the potential of LCP to enhance the clinical reasoning, psychomotor skills, and the patient-centred communication of the physiotherapy students. LCP is a constructivist and adult learning-based model that makes students connect theoretical with clinical practice by participating actively, engaging in self-directed learning, and reflecting on their practice. Problem-based learning, experiential learning, peer-assisted learning, and digital integration are instructional methods that can be used to achieve deeper understanding and professional competency. The changing role of educators as facilitators and the significance of faculty development for effective implementation are also covered in this chapter. While challenges such as resource constraints, increased cognitive load, and assessment complexities exist, strategic curriculum design and technological advancements offer viable solutions. Ultimately, learner-centred pedagogy prepares physiotherapy students to work in modern healthcare systems with high-quality patient care, flexibility, and lifelong learning.
