BRIDGING GENDER GAPS AND PROMOTING INCLUSION IN STEAM EDUCATION: A MULTIDIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS

Abstract

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education plays a critical role in shaping innovation and global development; however, persistent inequities related to gender, socioeconomic status, and other intersecting factors continue to limit participation. This chapter examines equity, inclusion, and gender perspectives in STEAM education through a comprehensive and intersectional lens. It highlights global disparities, particularly the underrepresentation of women and marginalized groups, despite comparable academic performance. Structural barriers such as unequal access to resources, cultural stereotypes, and biased pedagogical practices are discussed alongside psychological factors including stereotype threat and belonging uncertainty. The chapter further explores the importance of inclusive pedagogy, culturally responsive teaching, and representation in improving engagement and participation. Additionally, it evaluates policy initiatives and institutional strategies aimed at promoting equity in STEAM fields. The role of technology as both an enabler and barrier is also considered. Overall, the chapter emphasizes that achieving equity in STEAM education requires coordinated efforts across educational, social, and policy domains to create inclusive and empowering learning environments.
