Abstract

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) have emerged as transformative technologies in education, particularly within Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) learning. These immersive tools facilitate experiential learning by enabling students to actively engage with complex concepts through interactive and simulated environments. This chapter critically examines the role of VR and AR in STEAM education, highlighting their theoretical foundations, pedagogical applications, and empirical outcomes. Evidence from contemporary research suggests that immersive technologies significantly enhance learner engagement, spatial cognition, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving abilities. VR offers fully immersive environments for simulation-based learning, while AR integrates digital elements into real-world contexts, promoting contextual and situated learning. Despite these advantages, challenges such as high implementation costs, technological limitations, and pedagogical alignment persist. The chapter further explores emerging trends, including artificial intelligence integration and metaverse-based learning environments, which are expected to redefine experiential education and foster inclusive, personalized, and future-ready STEAM learning ecosystems.
