INTERDISCIPLINARY NATURE OF INDIAN KNOWLEDGE SYSTEM (IKS)

Abstract

The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) constitutes a profoundly integrative and holistic epistemological framework that has evolved over millennia within the Indian subcontinent. Distinguished by its inherently interdisciplinary orientation, IKS transcends the compartmentalization characteristic of modern disciplinary paradigms by fostering a unified vision of knowledge encompassing philosophy, science, medicine, mathematics, linguistics, arts and spirituality. This chapter critically examines the interdisciplinary essence of IKS by exploring its conceptual foundations, principal domains and their intrinsic interconnections. It elucidates how ancient Indian intellectual traditions synthesized empirical observation, rational inquiry and metaphysical insight into a coherent and comprehensive body of knowledge. Furthermore, the chapter evaluates the contemporary relevance of IKS in addressing multifaceted global challenges through integrative, sustainable and human-centric approaches.
