BRIDGING ANCIENT WISDOM AND MODERN EDUCATION: AN IKS PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) represents a rich and holistic tradition of knowledge that integrates philosophy, ethics, science, spirituality, and practical life. Ancient Indian education placed a premium on developing the physical, mental, intellectual, and character capacities of individuals through value-based and experience-centric learning processes. In contrast, modern education has made considerable contributions to science and technology but suffers from various shortcomings, such as stress-based learning, fragmented knowledge base, declining ethics, and cultural estrangement. This chapter will examine the applicability of Indian Knowledge Systems in modern education and explore ways in which ancient Indian education can inform current educational reforms. The chapter will analyze the philosophy underlying IKS, the features of traditional Indian education systems, the successes and failures of modern education, and the importance of adopting holistic and value-based education practices in modern times. Moreover, the chapter will discuss the role played by NEP 2020 in advancing Indian knowledge traditions. The conclusion of the chapter is that the synthesis of IKS and modern education is vital for formulating sustainable and inclusive educational systems in the modern age.
