REVISITING THE GURUKUL TRADITION: RELEVANCE FOR CONTEMPORARY INDIAN EDUCATION

Abstract

Education in India has evolved from the deeply rooted Gurukul system to a modern, institutionalized framework shaped by globalization and technological advancements. While the present system has improved accessibility and professional opportunities, it faces challenges such as rote learning, stress, and lack of value-based education. This paper critically examines the relevance of the ancient Gurukul system in the contemporary Indian education system. By analysing its philosophical foundations, pedagogical practices, and holistic approach, the study highlights its potential contributions to modern education. The paper argues for a balanced integration of traditional wisdom and contemporary innovation to create a more inclusive, ethical, and meaningful educational model.
