Abstract

Adolescence represents a transitional stage characterized by rapid physical, emotional, and psychological changes, often accompanied by heightened vulnerability to stress, anxiety, and behavioural challenges. In the contemporary educational context, there is an increasing need to address adolescent mental health through holistic and culturally relevant approaches. Yoga, rooted in India’s indigenous knowledge traditions, offers a comprehensive framework integrating physical, mental, and spiritual dimensions of human development. This research paper examines yoga as an indigenous knowledge system and analyses its role in promoting the holistic development of adolescent learners. It further explores the role of teachers in facilitating yoga-based practices to enhance mental health within school settings. The study adopts a qualitative methodology based on a systematic review of empirical research. Findings indicate that yoga significantly contributes to emotional regulation, cognitive functioning, resilience, and overall well-being. The paper concludes by emphasizing the integration of yoga into educational curricula as a sustainable strategy for promoting adolescent mental health and holistic development.
