Abstract

Life starts in the tune of music, while a baby utters Koham Koham “Who am I” at his or her birth. Life ends in the tune of music, while people mournfully shout “Ram Nam Satya He, Hari Nam Satya He”. Music has different components such as Swara, Tala, Laya, Raga and Rasa. A raga is the soul of Indian classical music. It is a melodic framework used to create musical tune. Tala plays an important role in indian music. Both musical composition and performance are incomplete without suitable Talas. Laya is the speed or tempo of time in music. It regulates the distance between two beats. Rasa literally translates to "essence," or "flavor" in Indian classical music. It refers to the emotional essence or mood that a musical performance creates within the listener. There are different forms of Indian music such as Hindustani, Cornatic and Odissi. Music influences our day to day life and promotes universal well-being. Music is an inevitable part of school and college curriculum. Music therapy is a part of medical science which is a path way from Arts to Science. So music should be taken as an important component of school and college curriculum.
