Abstract

Transformative learning has emerged as a significant educational approach in physiotherapy education, addressing the growing need for healthcare professionals who possess not only technical competence but also critical thinking, reflective abilities, adaptability, and patient-centered values. Traditional teaching methods, primarily based on lectures and passive knowledge acquisition, are increasingly being complemented by learner-centered strategies that promote deeper understanding and professional growth. Transformative learning enables students to critically examine their assumptions, integrate theoretical knowledge with clinical experiences, and develop new perspectives that enhance clinical reasoning and decision-making skills. This chapter explores the concept, theoretical foundations, and application of transformative learning approaches within physiotherapy education. Key strategies discussed include problem-based learning, reflective practice, simulation-based education, experiential learning, case-based learning, interprofessional education, community-based learning, and technology-enhanced learning. The chapter highlights how these approaches foster professional identity formation, effective communication, evidence-based practice, and lifelong learning. Additionally, it examines the role of educators, innovative assessment methods, implementation challenges, and future directions involving digital technologies and competency-based education. By promoting active engagement and critical reflection, transformative learning contributes significantly to the preparation of competent, compassionate, and adaptable physiotherapists capable of meeting the evolving demands of modern healthcare systems. Consequently, the integration of transformative learning approaches into physiotherapy curricula is essential for improving educational outcomes and enhancing the quality of patient care in diverse clinical settings.
