INNOVATIONS IN PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSESSMENT

Abstract

Assessment in physiotherapy education involves much more than simply awarding grades. It plays a central role in developing, monitoring, and confirming students’ clinical competence. This chapter explores a wide range of assessment and evaluation methods used in modern physiotherapy programmers and highlights the shift from traditional exam-focused approaches to more comprehensive and clinically relevant assessment practices. The chapter discusses formative assessment methods such as peer feedback, reflective practice, and video-assisted observation, as well as summative approaches including objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), standardized clinical placement evaluation tools, and portfolio-based assessment frameworks. It also examines the growing use of simulation technology and innovative written assessments, such as script concordance testing, to evaluate authentic clinical reasoning. In addition, attention is given to important aspects of assessment design, including validity, reliability, equity, inclusion, and the development of assessment literacy among both students and educators. Together, these approaches create a competency-focused framework that prepares physiotherapy graduates to address the real-world challenges of contemporary healthcare practice.
