SIMULATION BASED LEARNING IN HEALTHCARE TRAINING

Simulation-Based Learning (SBL) has become an essential educational strategy in healthcare training because it provides learners with safe, realistic, and controlled clinical experiences without risking patient safety. Modern healthcare systems demand professionals who possess not only theoretical knowledge but also strong psychomotor skills, communication abilities, teamwork, and clinical reasoning. Simulation bridges the gap between classroom teaching and real clinical practice by allowing repetitive practice, reflective learning, and immediate feedback. According to Lateef (2010), simulation recreates clinical situations in a guided environment where learners can safely develop competence and confidence. Various forms of simulation, including low-fidelity simulation, high-fidelity mannequins, standardized patients, virtual reality, augmented reality, and computer-assisted simulation, are widely used in medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, surgery, emergency care, and rehabilitation sciences. Organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) strongly support simulation-based healthcare education to improve patient safety and competency-based learning. Research demonstrates that simulation improves clinical decision-making, teamwork, communication, crisis management, and procedural skills while reducing medical errors. Although financial, technological, and faculty-related barriers exist, emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and remote simulation are expected to transform healthcare education in the future. Therefore, simulation-based learning is considered a cornerstone of modern healthcare education and patient-safe clinical practice.Published
