IMMERSIVE CLINICAL LEARNING: THE EMERGING ROLE OF VIRTUAL REALITY AND AUGMENTED REALITY IN HEALTHCARE EDUCATION

Abstract

The essence of learning in medical science is based upon the foundation of theoretical as well as practical approaches. Although traditional teaching remains the core of physiotherapy education, there is a substantial need for a technology that can facilitate more profound academic insight among medical students in this contemporary digital era, while also being effective in global crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. Advanced digital technologies that redefine reality, such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), enhance motor skill acquisition with sensory integration. Furthermore, they are helpful in overcoming the restrictions of in-person learning as well as fostering a safe learning environment. This chapter revolves around the concept of integration of VR and AR in medical learning and physiotherapy training, highlighting the principles and components of VR and AR, their salient features, applications, implications and future prospects.
