TRANSFORMING PHYSIOTHERAPY EDUCATION THROUGH VIRTUAL AND AUGMENTED REALITY

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are rapidly transforming physiotherapy education by providing immersive, interactive, and learner-centered educational experiences. Traditional physiotherapy training often faces challenges related to limited clinical exposure, patient availability, and opportunities for repetitive skill practice. VR creates simulated environments that allow learners to engage in realistic clinical scenarios, while AR enhances real-world experiences through digital overlays that support visualization and skill acquisition. Recent evidence suggests that VR and AR improve knowledge retention, psychomotor performance, clinical reasoning, learner engagement, and confidence among physiotherapy students. These technologies facilitate simulation-based learning, anatomy education, clinical assessment training, rehabilitation practice, and competency-based assessment. Furthermore, advancements in artificial intelligence and mixed reality technologies are expanding opportunities for personalized and adaptive learning. Despite their educational benefits, barriers such as high implementation costs, technological infrastructure requirements, faculty training needs, and accessibility challenges remain significant. This chapter explores the concepts, applications, benefits, challenges, and future directions of VR and AR in physiotherapy education and discusses their role in preparing future physiotherapists for modern healthcare practice.Published
