EVIDENCE-BASED PHYSIOTHERAPY EDUCATION AND PRACTICE: BRIDGING RESEARCH, CLINICAL DECISION-MAKING, AND PATIENT OUTCOMES

Abstract

Evidence-based physiotherapy integrates the best available research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values to guide clinical decision-making. This chapter examines the theoretical foundations, educational implementation, and clinical application of evidence-based practice (EBP) across diverse healthcare systems. After outlining the evolution from evidence-based medicine to the broader EBP concept, the chapter analyses the three core components – research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences. Contemporary physiotherapy education increasingly incorporates research literacy and critical appraisal skills, though substantial challenges persist including time constraints, limited research access, and knowledge translation gaps. Clinical applications across musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation are illustrated, with systematic reviews demonstrating improved outcomes for conditions such as low back pain and stroke. Digital evidence resources, clinical practice guidelines, and tele-rehabilitation offer promising innovations. The chapter concludes with practical recommendations for educators, clinicians, and policymakers, and includes a case study, discussion questions, and a critical appraisal of EBP’s limitations.
