Abstract

Professionalism and ethics are fundamental to physiotherapy practice, ensuring patient safety, professional accountability, and the delivery of high-quality healthcare services. Physiotherapists are expected to uphold ethical principles while providing patient-centered care across diverse clinical settings. Effective practice requires not only technical competence but also empathy, respect, and clear communication, which help build trust and therapeutic relationships. Ethical responsibilities include obtaining informed consent, maintaining patient confidentiality, respecting autonomy, and supporting patients in making informed decisions regarding their health. Evidence-based practice forms the foundation of physiotherapy, ensuring that assessment and treatment interventions are guided by scientific research rather than assumptions. Professional conduct is reflected through integrity, accountability, teamwork, leadership, respect, and a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development. With the increasing adoption of digital healthcare technologies, tele-rehabilitation, and innovative rehabilitation approaches, ethical considerations have become even more important in contemporary practice. This chapter explores the principles of ethics and professionalism, their applications, benefits, challenges, and future directions in physiotherapy. A strong understanding of these concepts is essential for developing competent, responsible, and ethical physiotherapists capable of delivering effective rehabilitation services.
