CHALLENGES AND INNOVATIONS IN INTERNSHIP

Abstract

Clinical internships represent a critical bridge between academic knowledge and professional physiotherapy practice. However, interns worldwide, including in India, frequently encounter significant challenges such as inadequate supervision, theory-practice gaps, burnout, placement inequities, and financial stress. These issues contribute to reduced confidence, high attrition rates, and suboptimal preparation for clinical roles. This chapter critically examines the key challenges in physiotherapy internships. It explores innovative strategies drawn from international best practices, including simulation-based learning, hybrid placement models, private sector engagement, and paid clinical placements. Particular attention is given to the Indian context alongside global perspectives from Australia, Nigeria, and other regions. By analyzing structural, educational, and psychosocial barriers, the chapter proposes actionable recommendations to enhance internship quality. Strengthening clinical education through these innovations is essential for developing competent, confident, and work-ready physiotherapy professionals capable of meeting contemporary healthcare demands.
