EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR TELE-REHABILITATION IN PHYSIOTHERAPY: A COMPETENCY-BASED APPROACH

Tele-rehabilitation has emerged as an essential service delivery modality in contemporary physiotherapy practice. The rehabilitation workforce remains inadequately prepared through formal education and training. This chapter critically examines the evolving role of TR in physiotherapy, evaluating the transition from traditional, face-to-face instruction to technology-driven, remote service delivery. By synthesizing current literature, this analysis identifies a comprehensive spectrum of knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) essential for effective practice, including technical proficiency, remote clinical reasoning, and adherence to digital ethical frameworks. The research highlights that while synchronous and hybrid delivery models offer significant potential for enhancing patient outcomes, their successful implementation is currently hindered by limited faculty expertise, inadequate curricula, and structural administrative barriers. Consequently, this chapter proposes an evidence-based, competency-centric pedagogical framework. By embedding structured TR training within existing curricula, institutions can better equip students and practitioners with the self-efficacy required to provide safe, sustainable, and high-quality care in an increasingly digitized clinical landscape.Published
