PREPARING TEACHERS FOR AI-INTEGRATED COMMUNICATION SKILLS INSTRUCTION: A FRAMEWORK FOR TEACHER EDUCATION IN THE DIGITAL AGE

Abstract

The field of teacher education is experiencing a notable transformation due to the influence of AI on modern teaching and learning methodologies. As the integration of technology becomes essential for educators within the current educational framework, there is a growing emphasis on promoting effective communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and learner engagement in digital classrooms. This chapter will explore how teacher education programs can assist educators in the effective incorporation of AI technology into their practices while supporting communication-centered pedagogies. Drawing on existing literature, the chapter will address the evolving competencies required of teachers and the opportunities and challenges associated with the integration of AI technology. The chapter examines the necessary pedagogical shifts for integrating AI into classroom settings. Rather than viewing AI as a threat to educators, it advocates a human-centered approach that leverages AI to enhance educators' professional judgment and communicative competence. The chapter concludes by presenting a conceptual model for teacher education institutions to implement AI technology-based communication competence within teacher education programs.
