Abstract

The rapid advancement of technology, globalization, educational reforms, and changing learner expectations have transformed the role of teachers in the twenty-first century. Teachers are no longer mere transmitters of knowledge; they are facilitators, innovators, mentors, researchers, and lifelong learners. The emergence of artificial intelligence, digital learning environments, competency-based education, and inclusive pedagogical practices requires teachers to acquire a broad range of professional competencies beyond subject expertise. This paper examines the concept of teacher competency, explores the emerging competencies required in contemporary education, analyses the challenges in developing these competencies, and suggests strategies for strengthening teacher professionalism. The paper concludes that continuous professional development, technological integration, reflective practice, and policy support are essential for preparing future-ready teachers capable of meeting the demands of Education 4.0 and sustainable development.
