Abstract

The process of decolonizing Indian education has gained renewed significance in the context of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). For several decades, the Indian education system has been influenced by colonial structures, knowledge frameworks, language preferences, and pedagogical practices. NEP 2020 seeks to address these legacies by promoting Indian knowledge systems, multilingualism, holistic learning, critical thinking, experiential education, and greater integration of technology. In this context, Artificial Intelligence offers both opportunities and challenges for transforming education in a more inclusive, learner-centred, and culturally responsive manner. AI-supported learning platforms can facilitate personalized learning, improve access to educational resources, support multilingual education, and preserve and disseminate indigenous knowledge. At the same time, issues such as the digital divide, algorithmic bias, data privacy, technological dependence, inadequate digital literacy, and the possible marginalization of local knowledge require careful consideration. This study explores how NEP 2020 and AI can contribute to the decolonization of Indian education while strengthening indigenous knowledge, languages, cultural identities, and democratic educational practices. The study adopts a qualitative and analytical approach based on relevant policy documents, scholarly literature, and secondary sources. It argues that the meaningful integration of AI with the principles of NEP 2020 can create a more equitable, culturally grounded, technologically empowered, and future-ready Indian education system.
